Junction: - as in atrioventricular junction between the atria and the ventricles - allows the impulse to go from the atria to the ventricles, and slows it via the atrioventricular node (a supraventricular structure) and the bundles of His. If the sinus does not generate an impulse the atrioventricular junction will fire at 40-60 beats per minute Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) - a mechanical pumping device that is surgically implanted; it helps maintain the pumping action of the heart and often used in patients who are waiting for a heart transplant.
