Morphological Characters

Body: Rectangular, strong and well-developed

Body coat: Black is the dominant body colour (87%); the rest are spotted black (11%) and brown (2%). Deep brown, yellow-brown and black and white may also be found usually.  However, few in pure white are found.

Head: Short

Forehead: Wide

Eyes: Small

Face: With small nose

Mouth: Big round with thin lips

Muzzle: Broad

Neck: Short, thick, strong

Chest: Deep wide chest and large heart girth

Quarters: High and wide withers

Belly: Larger

Back: Flat straight

Loin: Flat straight

Rump: Not fleshy but compact rump

Limbs: Short, strong legs with small solid feet.

Body weight: Adult male: 288 Kg, Adult female: 217 kg

Height at withers: Adult male: 111 cm, Adult female: 109 cm

Body length: Adult male: 123 cm, Adult female: 121 cm

Heart girth: Adult male: 155 cm, Adult female: 152 cm

Reproductive traits

Breeding age: 3½ years

Calving interval: One parity every two years is common

Production traits

Daily milk yield: 1.6 kg

Milk yield per lactation: 199.8 kg

Lactation length: 180 days

Dressing percentage: 51.6%

Fleece weight: 0.6 kg

Ghee production: 12.5-15.0 kg
