Dams and flood barriers protect people who live near rivers from the effects of floods. For example, millions of people depend on the Thames Barrier. On the Mississippi River in the United States, it has cost billions of dollars to control flooding by changing the course of the river and building levees to keep the water in its channel. Flood-defence steps can take care of the problem for a while, but the river fights back as it tries to find the easiest path across the land.
