For a small river, path from its source to a lake or to a place where it joins a bigger river may be quite short. Sometimes, many rivers join together to form a long system that drains a vast area of land. In Canada, the Mackenzie River system includes many rivers. It drains or carries water away from, an area that is almost as large as Mexico. The huge Amazon River flows across South America for 6515 km. On its way to the Atlantic Ocean, the river is joined by more than a thousand tributaries.
